Full Description

The original railway bridge over the Cowbridge Drain was built of timber in c.1848, at the same time as the railway line it serves. This structure was replaced by the current brick structure at some point, although stumps from the older wooden beams could be seen to project from the water in 1966. Historic Ordnance Survey mapping shows the bridge in its current plan form from at least the late 1880s. The wing walls and lower part of the abutments of the new bridge were built of red brick, whilst the upper part of the abutments were of blue brick. All of the brickwork was capped by stone slabs, thicker on the abutments than the wing walls. {1}{2}{3}
