Full Description
PRN 13307
A field evaluation and excavation at 69 Wide Bargate, Boston revealed traces of pits and ditches with late medieval fill material. This was interpreted as suggesting that domestic or commercial structures once stood on the street frontage at this point in c14-c15. The findings raise questions about flood management during the medieval period on and around this site. Before the construction of the Maud Foster Drain there were probably less substantial, perhaps more frequent, ditches and drainage dykes which allowed settlement of the area in preceding centuries. A ditch was found in one of the trenches, which may have served this purpose. Evidence for occupation layers was recorded. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}, htm 15m
Further evidence of medieval activity in this area was revealed by a watching brief in November 2005 to March 2006. A particularly long sequence of stratigraphy (4.25m deep) was recorded in excavations for a petrol interceptor, in close proximity to the street frontage, where natural silty sand was overlain by a thick deposit of humic silty clay containing well preserved plant remains, as well as faecal matter of possible human origin; the deposits may lie within a large ditch extending from the south (PRN 14489). Higher in the stratigraphy was a wall constructed from 14th to 16th century bricks. A large pit of probable 13th/14th century date was located further to the north, while investigations further to the west indicated possible areas of cultivation. {6}{7}
A trial trench evaluation (two trenches) in 2005, on land immediately to the north of the former Asda supermarket, located evidence of probable 14th and 15th century deposits (in Trench 2 on the northern side of the site; TF 33043 44627), sealed by a possible occupation layer of 15th/16th century date. The latter had been cut by a number of postholes. {8}{9}
