PRN 14489
Medieval deposits, primarily 13th/14th century in date, were located during a watching brief on excavations for a lift shaft and escalator on the street frontage immediately south of the block of buildings, Nos. 62-74 Horncastle Road. The earliest phase of activity was located in deep excavations for the lift pit, where thick deposits of silty clay appeared to fill a large feature - possibly a drainage ditch predating the establishment of the Maud Foster Drain and the later medieval street frontage. The latest fill incorporated 14th century pottery, while samples from the same deposit included plant remains indicative of waterlogging. Similar deposits were identified in excavations further to the north (PRN 13307), perhaps indicating a continuation of the same feature. At a higher level, within the area of the escalator pit, was a clay floor dated as 14th century, overlain by a layer of probable occupation debris containing hammerscale indicative of metal working. A wall foundation, aligned east to west and constructed in brick and tile, may have belonged to the same phase of activity, while a possible continuation of the floor was noted in the lift shaft area, where it was cut by a small pit. Thick deposits of overlying material might have derived from a hiatus in settlement related activity. {1}{2}
