Full Description

Two graves, each containing the articulated remains of an adult inhumation, were discovered on land at Canwick Hill during trial trenching in May 2014. The first was found in a sub-oval grave cut, aligned roughly north-south. A square headed iron nail, possibly a coffin nail, was recovered from the top of the feature. The grave had been disturbed by ploughing and disarticulated human bone was recovered from the subsoil above the feature. Analysis of the sacrum suggested the remains were of a mature male under the age of 30. The undisturbed skeletal remains were preserved in situ. The second burial was located in a broadly east-west aligned oval grave cut about 70m to the east-southeast of the first. A possibly complete greyware beaker appears to have been buried with this individual as a grave good. Again, this grave was not excavated and the remains were preserved in situ. {1}{2}
