Full Description
An undated crouched inhumation burial was encountered during trial trenching in August-September 2016. No dating evidence was identified during excavation, and the inhumation was retained in situ. Based on the presence of a nearby Iron Age field system and a Roman settlement, an approximate date may be suggested but is unproven. {1}{2}
Subsequent archaeological excavation conducted in 2017 revealed two more graves approximately 40m to the northwest. Both burials were on a northwest to southeast alignment, with the head at the northwest end. No finds were recovered from one of the grave cuts, while 26 coffin nails were recovered from the other. Interestingly, both were on the same alignment as, and appeared to respect, an adjacent ditch of late 2nd to 3rd century AD date. It was suggested that they may have been contemporary with the use of the ditch and therefore of mid-Roman date. It is unclear if they are contemporary with the burial encountered during the trial trenching. {3}{4}
