Full Description
A series of medieval and post medieval features were found during archaeological monitoring and recording at 28 Broadgate (ELI14492). The foundations of both the house and the septic tank were monitored.
The house foundation revealed two linear features, aligned north to south, and found in segments running parallel to each other, these were identified as two ditches. The west ditch shows evidence of post medieval truncation. Sections of the ditch contained sherds of pottery dating from 1100 to 1250AD. A posthole cut one section of the ditch. The posthole cut the medieval fill of the ditch, giving a post medieval date. A sub-rectangular or linear feature also cut this ditch, the full extent of which was not exposed. No finds were found. The east ditch contained sherds of mid 16th to 18th century pottery within its segments. The ditch was cut by a large circular feature lined with brick, which was identified as a well or cistern. This is most likely associated with the post-medieval house that lay on the site.
The features found lay on the site of a farmhouse that is likely late 18th century in date (MLI127025). The features have been interpretated as medieval field systems that preceded the house.
Two possible pits or natural features were also uncovered within the house foundation. No finds were recovered from them.
The foundation for the septic tank revealed three pits. Two of the pits revealed sherds of 12th to 13th century pottery, and one pit contained no finds. The pits are all interpretated as being contemporary and medieval in date, and were possible rubbish pits or used for agricultural practices. {1}{2}
