Full Description
Having first been identified in geophysical survey {1} and trial trenching {2}{3}, an area of ditched enclosure with associated roundhouses dating to the Late Iron Age with evidence for pastoral agriculture including stock enclosures and watering holes was subject to open excavation {4}{5}. It is believed the site was only occupied for a generation or two. The layout was considered suggestive of an original enclosed, largely nucleated settlement which was later extended to incorporate additional fields, animal enclosure ditches, and droveways.
The preservation of the roundhouses was found to have been impacted by medieval ditches and later ploughing, although hearth features were apparent in some of the structures. The dividing line between stock enclosures/shelters, and roundhouses appears to have been blurred with some of the excavated structures seemingly performing double duties. In addition to the roundhouses several other structures were noted including three four-post structures with evidence for spelt wheat, oat, and barley grain storage, and two beam slotted structures of uncertain purpose.
Evidence was present for a Late Iron Age to Roman transitionary phrase, although the locus of settlement appeared to have moved north and northwest by the Roman period. The earliest Roman features respect the run of the Late Iron Age features, with the Iron Age features extended and superseded over time rather than in one phase.
