Full Description

A series of Medieval features that pre-date the 13th century Carmelite Friary (MLI30621) were encountered during trial trenching in 2017 and an archaeological excavation between 2017 and 2018. The investigations revealed a group of intercutting waste pits containing large quantities of both pottery and ironworking waste. Environmental sampling of one pit fill produced slag and thousands of fragments of hammerscale, suggesting primary smithing was taking place on or near the site. A nearby terracing deposit with a probable limestone retaining wall (possibly constructed as part of the friary precinct, though this is not certain) produced 11th-12th century pottery, more hammerscale, and a fragment of Collyweston slate. {1}{2}{3}{4}
