Description

Three trial trenches were excavated on land at 'Holwell' on St Paul's Street, Stamford, prior to the construction of a proposed residential development. Several dumped deposits and areas of made ground containing large quantities of 11th to 13th century pot were encountered, truncated by two pits also containing more Medieval pottery, dumps of limestone rubble and hearth bottoms. These features pre-date the Carmelite Friary established on the same site in the 13th century. {1}{2}
