Full Description

During trial trenching between June 2013 and July 2015 a large pit containing large quantities of Medieval ironworking debris was encountered. Subsequent analysis of the retained slag revealed micro-residues including plate hammerscale, indicating this was a deposit of both smelting and forging waste from a nearby ironworking site or sites. The cut of the pit truncated a backfilled Medieval cellar constructed of limestone (see MLI98862) and was sealed by the since-demolished post-Medieval building at 40/40a St Paul's Street. {1}{2}
