Description

Nine trial trenches were excavated on land to the south of Burton Cliff Cottages, Middle Street, Burton by Lincoln, to inform the construction of four new dwellings. An undated pit and Roman features including a limestone rubble foundation were encountered. A deposit of stone and painted wall plaster was recovered from the backfill of a ditch. {1}{2} Subsequent strip, map and sample excavation (see ELI14330) revealed the possible limestone foundation and construction cut to be the backfill of a ditch, with high concentrations of limestone along its length interpreted as redeposited bank material
