Full Description

Three possible enclosures on land to the west of Middle Street, Burton by Lincoln, identified during magnetometry survey in April-July 2014. Anomalies interpreted as three sides of a rectangular enclosure were encountered, with a possible secondary enclosure or annexe to the west. Immediately to the north, one side and a corner of another possible rectilinear enclosure was encountered. All three possible enclosures shared the same alignment. {1} Subsequent trial trenching on the same site in July-August 2014 encountered a ditch of Roman date to the west of the northern enclosure, on the same northwest-southeast alignment as the enclosure ditches. A waste pit immidiately to the west of this ditch contained large quantities of scorched ironstone and "sooty" deposits, and is likely to be associated with a known group of Roman kilns a short distance to the north (see MLI52249). {2}{3}
