Description

A magnetometry survey was conducted on 69ha. of land at Leverton Farms, Burton by Lincoln, to inform the proposed construction of a new solar farm. The survey area comprised five fields over three discrete plots of land. In the western plot, parallel linear anomalies possibly representing a trackway, an enclosure with a possible annexe or secondary sub-enclosure and a third possible enclosure, and groups of possible pits or kilns were encountered. Extant ridge and furrow earthworks were also noted in the eastern field of this area, and the presence of anomalies corresponding to ditch and pond features depicted on historic Ordnance Survey maps was noted. In the central plot, a network of linear anomalies was interpreted as a possible prehistoric field system, though a geological origin could not be discounted. At the northern corner of this plot, a probable rectilinear field system was encountered. A further possible field system was encountered at the western end of the eastern plot, close to Middle Street. Linear anomalies denoting possible ridge and furrow remains were encountered in the eastern half of this plot, along with two sides of a possible rectilinear enclosure. {1}
