Description

55 trial trenches were excavated on land at Leverton Farms, Burton by Lincoln, to inform the construction of a proposed solar farm. The trenched area comprised three fields over three discrete plots of land. In the western plot an undated ditch, an undated though possibly Roman waste pit, a possible sunken featured building of Anglo-Saxon date, and a series of parallel, overlapping linears possibly representing a migrating field boundary were encountered. The presence of a possible palaeochannel was also noted. In the central plot, no archaeological features or deposits were encountered, and anomalies identified during prior magnetometry survey (see ELI14326) were discovered to be of geological origin. Similar geological disturbances accounted for the geophysical anomalies identified in the eastern plot. A single large, shallow pit of possible Roman date was also encountered in the eastern plot. {1}{2}
