Full Description

A grouping of four pits, a possible beam slot, and a gully of Saxo-Norman date were identified on land at Middlesykes Lane, Grimoldby, during an archaeological excavation in 2019. A cylindrical fired clay object, possibly representing part of a kiln or oven, was recovered from the charcoal-rich deliberate backfill of one of the pits. An environmental sample from the same fill contained over 100 charred cereal grains, mainly from free-threshing wheat. These features likely represent early settlement activity. {1}{2} The Saxo-Norman features at this location were sealed or truncated by other features of Medieval date (see MLI127300), suggesting continuity of occupation.
