Full Description

A predominently Greyware-based pottery assemblage (745 sherds, weighing 22.72kg) dated to the late 2nd and early 3rd century, found in context with a kiln and possible evidence for clay extraction, was identified during evaluation trenching on land off Linwood Road to the south of Market Rasen, in 2014. Rim sherds, bases, sherds, handles, and a complete pot were recovered, with fabrics including greyware, Parisian ware, white ware, and native ware types, with a small quantity of Central Gaulish Samian also identified. An additional 0.583kg of kiln furniture was also recorded. The kiln itself was circular, with walls between 0.30m and 0.38m thick, with associated construction stakeholes and a probable stoking area. {1}{2} It is likely that the site, alongside comparable Roman pottery production and industrial sites in the area (MLI54269, MLI52736), forms part of a larger extra-mural industrial zone.
