Full Description

An Iron Age enclosure and associated features identified by geophysical survey and archaeological evaluation on land to the west of Dunston Road, Metheringham. The enclosure consisted of a single rectangular ditch, possibly with an opening at the west side. The north side of the ditch appeared to be disrupted by later agricultural activity on the site. Within the enclosure, a post hole and several drainage ditches were identified, possibly suggesting the presence of structures or related settlement activity. Late Iron Age pottery was recovered from a number of these features. Further to the west, a single northeast-southwest aligned boundary ditch was identified, from which a fragment of a clay Iron Age loom weight and a small assemblage of animal bone were recovered. {1}{2}{3}
