Full Description

A detailed programme of archaeological recording was conducted after a large, T-shaped fragment of wood was found washed up on the foreshore at Moggs Eye after heavy storms in late January 2017. The fragment was of oak, and measured some 4.4m long. Preliminary studies of the timber's appearance suggested similarities to early medieval ship timbers, in particular the Oseberg Viking ship, with the Moggs Eye timber appearing to share attributes with a 'rib with mast-step' timber from that vessel. The fragment was recovered for conservation treatment and further investigation, including sampling for radiocarbon dating. This sampling returned a calibrated radiocarbon date of 3940-3700 cal BC (95% probability), and indicated an early Neolithic date for the fragment. The detailed investigation also noted no definitive evidence for woodworking could be seen on any part of the timbers. Rather than being part of an early medieval or Viking ship, as had been previously suggested, the fragment was thought to be from the submerged prehistoric forest, known to exist off the Lincolnshire coast. The base of the timber showed evidence of having been wrenched off an in-situ piece, suggesting an original location off-shore, rather than having eroded out from a beach deposit. {1}{2}{3}
