Abstract/Summary
Archive for the programmes of archaeological recording, conducted after a large, T-shaped fragment of wood was found washed up on the foreshore at Moggs Eye after heavy storms in late January 2017. The fragment measured some 4.4m long, and was tentatively identified as a possible early medieval ship's timber. The fragment was recovered for conservation treatment and further investigation, including sampling for radiocarbon dating, which returned an early Neolithic date for the fragment. No definitive evidence for woodworking could be seen on any part of the timbers. Rather than being part of an early medieval or Viking ship, as had been previously suggested, the fragment was thought to be from the submerged prehistoric forest, known to exist off the Lincolnshire coast.
