Description

A magnetometry survey was conducted to inform the proposed construction of a new residential estate in two fields on land off Lincoln Road, Ruskington. A number of linear anomalies were identified in the southern field, including a north-south aligned linear anomaly proposed to be the continuation of the pre-1888 field boundary seen in the northern field. An east-west aligned linear anomaly intersects this at right angles; this is suggested to be part of the same field boundary system. Towards the south of the field were a number of positive linear anomalies. Two of these can be seen on aerial photography and satellite imagery and are suggested to be Roman in date. A series of irregular linear anomalies were considered to be possibly geological in origin. {1} Subsequent trial trenching on this site (see ELI13954) confirmed the presence of the possible Roman ditch feature, but was unable to provide positive dating. As in the northern field (see ELI13951), east-west aligned possible medieval or post-medieval furrows were excavated, which matched the geophysical anomalies ascribed to agricultural trends in the survey. For the magnetometry survey of the southern field, see ELI13951.
