Full Description

The building was constructed by Mark & Spencer Ltd and opened as a store of theirs in 1931. {1} In 2021 the building was no longer a Mark & Spencer store. {2} The two storey building is primarily construted of brick, with a white stone façade to the Market Place. The ground floor façade has a modern shop front, the first floor has three bays divided by embedded Corinthian columns. {3} The rightmost bay of the building was added in 1962, after the demolition of the adjoining Athenaum building. The rear extensions of the building were also constructed at this time with the demolition of the Corn Exchange. {4}
