Full Description

The Green Dragon Inn was one Boston's earlies inns. It was mentioned in 1590, under the name of the "Green Hunde", as one of 5 houses licensed to sell beer and ale brewed outside of the town. {1} The Green Dragon was demolished in 1854 and a building which housed a literary and scientific instution called 'The Athenaeum' which was established in 1851 and was an amalgamation of the Mechanics' Instutiton, founded in 1837, and the Public Library, founded in 1830. The Athenaeum did not have a dedicated building and had previously used rooms near the fish market on Church Street. This building was erected by the Corn Exchange Company and The Athenaeum where its tenants. The three storey neo-classical building was constructed of Ancaster stone and topped by an open balustrade. The ground floor had three bays divided by Doric columns, the right bay was the entrance passage to The Athenaeum and the Corn Exchange. The Corn Exchange had to be accessed through here, as it was not facing the Marke Place and was enclosed by other buildings. The other two bays in the ground floor were plate glass windows. The first floor was, with higher ceilings than the other two, divided in three bays also. These bays were composed of Ionic columns and three windows. The second floor also had three bays with windows which were divided by Corinthian columns. {2}{3}{4} The building was sold to the Boston Scala Theatre Co., Ltd. in 1920 as part of the conversion of the associated Corn Exchange into a cinema. {5} The Athenaeum building was demolished at some point between 1960 and 1962 and was replaced with an extension of the adjoining Marks and Spencers building. {6}{7}{8}
