Full Description

St John the Baptist C.E. Primary School at Hawthorn Bank, Spalding. The earliest (northern) part of the school was erected at the sole cost of Miss Mary Ann Johnson, who also paid for the erection of the adjacent church (see MLI126340) and vicarage (see MLI126341). Miss Johnson spent nearly £20,000 on the construction of the buildings, and also left £1000 in her will for the distribution of coal to the poor of the parish. The school was designed by the architect Robert Jewell Withers, and was likely constructed by the same company who built the adjacent church (Huddlestone and Son of Lincoln). It is built of stone with gabled slate roofs. The school was opened on the 31st of May 1875, with Miss Clara Brummitt being appointed the first headmistress, a post she held until 1913. The school has been significantly expanded, with new extensions added to the south at several times in the mid and late 20th century. {1}{2}{3}
