Full Description

Anglican parish church built of stone, and erected at the sole cost of Miss Mary Ann Johnson, who also paid for the erection of the adjacent school (see MLI126342) and vicarage (see MLI126341). Miss Johnson spent nearly £20,000 on the construction of the buildings, and also left £1000 in her will for the distribution of coal to the poor of the parish. The foundation stone was laid by Miss Johnson on the 12th of February 1874, with construction finished by the 31st of May 1875, when the church was consecrated and opened by Christopher Wordsworth, Bishop of Lincoln. A Census of Religious Worship taken on Sunday the 27th of November 1881 revealed that 213 people were present for morning service, with 152 people attending the evening service. The church was designed in an Early English style by the architect Robert Jewell Withers. It was built by the company of Huddlestone and Son of Lincoln, and is constructed of stone, with the western portal set in a broad projection which steps back gradually to receive the bell-turret. The interior of the wide nave is largely featureless, though the lancet chapel has stained glass windows. In the north aisle are four windows by Kempe and Co., dating from 1918-30. {1}{2}{3}
