Full Description

The school was opened in 1871 and closed in 2004. The school building and associated residential building were demolished in 2019 to make way for a care home {1}. The one and a half storey school building was constructed of red brick with a gable roof and slate tiles. The associated building was formerly the teacher's residence; it was a two-storey red brick detached house. {2} A historic building survey was undertaken by Witham Archaeology prior to the buildings' demolition. The school building was in L-shape plan form, with a large school room on each arm and an office for the teacher at the junction of the two. A large number of deep vertical grooves had been carved into the brickwork on every elevation of the school building; the reason for this graffiti is unknown, but the grooves are considered too deep to be a tally system. {3}{4}
