Full Description
This range of buildings forms the southern block to the former Caistor Union Workhouse, and was constructed in 1836 as part of the re-organisation of the earlier Caistor House of Industry site (see MLI52697 for the general workhouse record). The range is thought to have provided additional living and working space for the workhouse residents. The range was subject to extensive alterations in 1937, as part of the conversion of the site to use as a hospital, specialising in the care of mentally ill patients, before closing in 1990. {1}2}{3}
The range was noted and photographed in April 1995, during a site visit conducted in response of plans for the possible redevelopment of the former Caistor House of Industry site. Whilst the range was still extant and in relatively fair condition at the time of the visit, most of the windows were boarded up and some deterioration of the structures was becoming apparent.
The range originally consisted of two long and narrow single-storey structures, linked by a central gateway. They were constructed of rendered brick, and feature hipped slate roofs. The eastern building is believed to have been almost entirely rebuilt in 1937, as part of the works to convert the site to a hospital. The re-built block was still single-storey, although with the roof raised to a higher position. It is thought to have functioned as the hospital's laundry and boiler room, providing hot water to the rest of the complex. The use of the western block is less certanly known, and may have formed additional ward space or had an administrative function. {4}
The building has since been demolished, with the wider site being redeveloped for housing. The southern block was demolished in late 1998, as seen on the Google Earth satellite imagery layers. {5}
