Full Description
The Red Lion Inn was the subject of a detailed programme of historic building recording, conducted in October 2018, in advance of its proposed demolition. Historical records show that the building had been operating as a public house from the late 18th or early 19th century. Some of the internal fabric and features noted during the recording may suggest an earlier construction date or rebuilding for the structure, however. These features were located in the south range, and comprised a stone plinth and oak 'A' frame roof, suggestive of an encased timber frame in this part of the building. Recording during the demolition process identified further timbers in the street-frontage side, suggesting that part had also begun as a timber-framed structure. The building was comprised of a variety of construction materials, as it stood at the time of recording, reflecting the extensive later alterations and extensions that had occurred. These alterations included the application of an external white render to cover the variety of building materials and produce a unified external appearance. Other significant alterations included the replacement of the entire first floor and relocation of the staircase in the late 20th century. {1}{2}
Demolition of the building had been completed by the end of April 2019, and the site is now occupied by a Co-op convenience store. {3}
