Abstract/Summary

Report on a programme of historic building recording, conducted to inform the proposed demolition of the former Red Lion Inn at Sturton by Stow. The former public house is thought to date from the late 18th or early 19th century, though some internal features including a stone plinth and oak 'A' frame roof may suggest an earlier construction date or rebuilding. Recording during the demolition process identified further timbers, suggesting the building had began as a timber-framed structure, at least to the street-front. The building had been subject to extensive later alterations and extensions, including the application of an external white render to cover the variety of building materials and produce a unified external appearance.
