Full Description

Late 19th century cast iron footbridge at Stamford Town Railway Station. The footbridge is first depicted on historic Ordnance Survey mapping of this area in 1900, suggesting a construction date at some point between 1887 and 1900. The bridge is a well-preserved example of the standard Midland Railway design of this time, considered to be among the most handsome of footbridge designs. It has a gently curved span with lattice ironwork balusters and intermediate uprights. The straight flights of open steps have stick balusters which form into delicate arches at the top, and square, chamfered newel posts surmounted by domed finials. The bridge is supported at each end by four cast iron columns with octagonal bases which have a chevron outline on plan and stylised Corinthian columns. The bridge is stamped with the maker's name, 'T. Woodhall, Boiler, Bridge and Roofing Works, Dudley, England'.
