Full Description

The Boars Head is an early 19th century public house, standing next to Louth's long established livestock market. The building was extended incrementally in the late 19th century, and has many 20th century alterations and additions. It is L-shaped in plan, with the principal elevation aligned east-west and facing onto Newmarket. The building complex is constructed of brick, and has slate and clay pantile roofs with brick chimneys. The original building is of two storeys and three bays, with a central doorway on the principal elevation. An outbuilding of equal size is to the left of the main building, and a further two storey range is to the rear, fronting onto the market site. Little is known of its early history, or when its use as a public house first began, but its location, alongside the long-established livestock market site in the centre of Louth, suggests that the activities of the public house and the market site were always closely related, both in terms of the provision of food, drink and perhaps accommodation, but also the availability of ancillary market facilities, such as the storage of materials for livestock, and stabling. The Boars Head was assessed for listing by Historic England in May 2019. Although the building is of local historical interest, it was decided that the criteria for listing was not met in this instance, as the building has sustained significant levels of alteration, including the renewal of the roof carpentry and much of the exterior and interior joinery. {1}{2}
