Full Description

The partial footprint of a large medieval building was exposed in May 2012, during trial trenching on the site of the former Bull and Chain Public House, 7 Langworthgate, Lincoln. The remains comprised stone foundations running at least 14m long (north to south), 4m wide (east to west), and likely extending beyond the edge of the site to the east. Three different flooring surfaces abut the wall, one of which was made of crude, unglazed tiles. Due to the lack of surviving courses on the stone foundations, it was thought that the superstructure of the building may have been timber-framed with infilled brick, clay or plaster. The structure was built on top of a layer of accumulated material and debris containing finds from the Saxon and medieval periods. Another layer beneath the building contained chalk and ceramic building material, and may represent a 13th-15th century building that was demolished and leveled prior to the construction of the medieval building. A stone lined feature found directly outside the building may have been a privy chute or cess-pit. The feature measured 1.2m by 1.5m wide, 0.9m deep, and tapered inwards as the shaft descends. The fill of the feature contained a large quantity of semi-articulated animal bones (primarily domestic fowl, cat, kitten, puppy, and lamb bones), occasional 14th-15th century pottery and ceramic building material, and residual Saxon pottery sherds (see PRN71264). {1}{2} A continuation of the wall of the medieval building was uncovered during groundworks for the construction of new residential dwellings on the site. A further collection of redeposited pottery dating to the medieval period was also recovered, along with small further quantities of animal bone and ceramic building material. {3}{4}
