Full Description

Walcott war memorial adjoins the churchyard of the Church of St Oswald on the High Street. Unveiled in 1921, the memorial commemorates those who died in the First World War and the Second World War. The memorial was designed by Messrs William Henry Maxey and Sons of Sleaford, and is a Clipsham stone octagonal column set on a pedestal mounted on two steps and terminating with a foliated cross. The names of the fallen are recorded on green Ambleside inset panels. {1} This memorial takes the form of an elegant and ornate Clipsham stone floriated cross, located to the north-west of the Church of St Oswald. It is set within a gravelled enclosure with a hedge on three sides and a wrought-iron fence on the side facing the road. It stands 4.5m in height and is formed of an octagonal column which rises from a four-sided plinth and double-stepped base, with the column terminating in a foliated cross. The memorial was unveiled on 29 May 1921. It commemorates eleven members of the local community who lost their lives in the First World War. Following the Second World War an additional inscription was added to commemorate the two local men who died in that conflict.
