Full Description
Parish church dating from 1852, built to replace an earlier medieval chapel located in Walcott, which had been demolished in about 1790 (see MLI82868). Confusion with historical records in the mid 19th century had led to the belief that the earlier chapel had been dedicated to St Oswald (rather than St Margaret which is now thought most likely), and the new church was therefore also dedicated to St Oswald. The church is built of stock brick with ashlar dressings, and features slate roofs with decorative ridge tiles. It is set upon an ashlar chamfered plinth and has angle buttresses with ashlar set-offs. It is comprised of a five-bay nave and a two-bay chancel, with three tall chamfered lancets within a pointed arch chamfered surround in the nave west wall. A small gabled bellcote is above the ashlar coped gable. The north nave wall has two tall chamfered lancets to each bay, and the chancel has a single small chamfered lancet to each bay. The east wall has three chamfered lancets, the central one being taller. The nave south wall has a projecting gabled porch with ashlar coped gable with kneelers. The double chamfered archway has an ashlar hoodmould with label stops. The interior has a chamfered and pointed chancel arch. The wooden pews, pulpit, choir stalls, reredos and altar are all 19th century in date. The octagonal bowl and stem font is of ashlar stone.
