Description
A magnetometry survey was carried out on land at South Ormsby Hall Estate to help inform a planning application for remedial works to the Hall and wider estate. The survey area is subdivided into 4 separate areas: two to the west of the Hall itself, one to the east and another to the south. In the first and westernmost area earthworks are present which could be of medieval origin and which are possibly associated with a linear feature found in the magnetometry survey. The north-south oriented linear feature, which turns east on its norther end, could be a boundary a former field boundary associated with the medieval earthworks. The same can be said for three other east-west orientated ditches or hollow ways identified in this area. A small rectangular enclosure and possible pits or ponds were also identified in this area. The second area is located just to the east of the first and to the west of, and adjacent to, the Hall; this survey area is located within the walled garden of the Hall. Many north-south and east-west oriented linear features were identified in the second area, some may be former garden features, possible trackways or edges of an enclosure. In area 3, immediately to the east of the Hall, linear features were als oidenified, as well as irregular features that may have been pits or ponds. Like in area 1, many of the linear features identified in area 4, located to the south, probably relate to extant earthworks. {1}
