Wainfleet St Mary war memorial stands in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary. Dedicated in 1920, the memorial is a 14ft (4m) high stone wayside cross set upon a two-stepped plinth. Four tablets record the names of the fallen from the First World War and the Second World War. {1} This memorial takes the form of a tall and imposing, stone Calvary cross, standing to the south-east of the Church of St Mary. The cross stands 4.3m high, and faces west. It is raised on a broad two-stepped base, square on plan, supporting a square plinth surmounted by a small octagonal pedestal. The cross-shaft, octagonal in section, is topped with a carved hooded crucifix with the figure of Christ on the western face of the cross-head. The memorial was unveiled on 29 February 1920. It was built by the stone mason Mr Henry Charles Wood of Wainfleet and cost £160, a sum raised by public subscription. It commemorates twenty one members of the local community who lost their lives in the First World War. Following the Second World War an additional inscription was added to the memorial to commemorate the seven members of the local community who lost their lives in that conflict.
