Full Description

The small complex of former agricultural buildings at Netherdene Farm was the subject of a programme of historic building recording, conducted in January 2016, prior to their proposed renovation and conversion to residential use. The surveyed building comprises a mid 19th century barn, which was built of roughly coursed limestone rubble, quite likely during the 1840s remodelling of the farm. This building was substantially enlarged in the late 20th and early 21st centuries with the addition of a timber lean-to at the western side, and new stable ranges to the east. The structure is thought to have originally been used as a hand-threshing barn, but was later converted to storage and livestock accommodation. The later extensions and alterations rebuilt the upper part of the structure in brick, laid in an English Garden Wall bond, blocked many of the original openings, and replaced the original pitched roofing material with modern cement tiles. {1}{2}
