Full Description

The remains of a shallow gully was recorded in this area in October 2016, during trial trenching on land to the north of Station Road. The feature was aligned on a roughly north-west to south-east axis, and had gently sloping sides with a wide, flat base. A single rim sherd from a handmade, shell-gritted jar or bowl of 1st century Romano-British date was recovered from the fill of this feature, indicating a likely date for this activity. An environmental sample taken from the gully's fill could support this interpretation, with small quantities of spelt wheat and barley (common crops of this period) being identified. {1}{2}
