Full Description

The churchyard at the Church of St Oswald is depicted on the 2nd edition 25 inch Ordnance Survey County Series map. The current church dates from the 12th century, but an earlier 11th century church is thought to have existed on the site, and it is possible that the churchyard dates back to this period as well (see PRN 50159). {1} Two burials were recorded in 1982, during excavations within the present Church of St Oswald. The exact date of the burials was unknown, although they were overlain by the sandstone foundations of the earlier medieval structure, thus pre-dating this earlier structure. The burials would therefore imply that the burial ground in this area had even earlier origins than the 11th century structure thought to have stood on this site. {2}
