Full Description

Brickyard Cottages, Glentham. Partially extant 19th century farmstead. Regular courtyard with L-plan range plus detached buildings to the third side of the yard. The farmhouse is attached to a range of working buildings. There has been a partial loss (less than 50%) of traditional buildings. Isolated location. {1} The farmstead is named on the 1st edition 6" Ordnance Survey map as 'Brickyard Cottages'. The placename would suggest that this was the site of a former brickworks. Cropmarks of what appears to be a former clay extraction pit can clearly be seen on the Google Maps aerial photographic layer, to the immediate south-west of the farmstead. No depiction of the pit is marked on the historic mapping, suggesting it had been backfilled and that the brickworks was no longer in operation by the time of the first OS survey in the late 1880s. {2}{3}
