Full Description
Unnamed farmstead, Cabourne. Partially extant 19th century farmstead. Loose courtyard with three sides of the courtyard formed by working agricultural buildings. The farmhouse location is unclear. There has been a partial loss (less than 50%) of traditional buildings. Isolated location. {1}
Former agricultural complex in a U-shape plan form around a small enclosed courtyard with a gated boundary wall to the west. The North and East Ranges are single storey buildings constructed of buff brick in English Garden Wall Bond, under pitched hipped slate roofs, while the South Range is a steel and timber framed building with timber cladding and a pitched gabled corrugated roof. The North Range has a single central arched doorway on its south elevation, with a matching entrance mirroring it to the north. A large double sliding door at the west end of the north elevation may be a later addition. Internally, the building has been divided by steel and breeze block partitions to create a number of pig crates. The East Range has a single central window in the south elevation with a timber ventilation grille, and a matching boarded up window in the north elevation. Its west elevation, facing into the courtyard, has two flat arched stable doors with a large window to the south of each door. Internally it has been divided by low hardboard partitions into two bays. The South Range is a large modern animal barn, open to the rafters. The original southern boundary wall survives and forms the lower half of this barn's south and west elevations. {2}
The North and East Ranges appear on the First Edition 25 inch OS map (published 1887) and therefore date to at least the late 19th century. Both seem to survive with little alteration through the 20th century; a small extension at the north end of the East Range appears on the Second Edition 25 inch OS map (published 1907), though this no longer survives. The South Range is likely a late 20th century addition, and is not present in its current form on historic mapping, though two small outbuildings are shown at the south end of the courtyard on the 1907 map. Although used in the 20th century for agricultural purposes, the presence of a stable block and lack of any associated ancillary buildings or farmhouse, as well as the name 'Hunters Yard', suggests that this complex may originally have been used as a meeting point and stables for nearby hunts. {3}{4}{5}
The buildings were converted into a single residential property between 2018 and 2021. The South Range was demolished to make way for a new single storey building, constructed in sympathetic style to the remaining ranges. {6}
