Full Description
A concentration of possible pits and linear features was identified in this location in August 2013, during magnetometry survey of land at Abbey Field. The features were recorded as a large number of small amorphous magnetic anomalies, some of which could represent the remains of former pits and potentially structural features. No date for this activity could be determined, however, and the features may be of relatively recent origin, given the presence of several nearby modern and late post-medieval drains recorded by the same survey. {1}
A subsequent programme of trial trenching was conducted on the same site in June 2014, targeting the features recorded by the geophysical survey. Three broad phases of occupational activity were identified, dating from the 12th century to the 17th century. Although no definite structural features were encountered, demolition debris including brick, stone, mortar and Medieval pottery was identified in the backfill of a pit. A number of earlier ditches were found to be sealed by an occupation layer rich in charcoal, from which 14th to 16th century pottery and a 15th to 16th century iron knife were recovered. Environmental sampling of a pit dating to the 17th century indicated that flax seed processing was also taking place on or near the site, and a series of vertically-sided and flat-bottomed trenches were interpreted as having been lined with wood and used for storing either water or agricultural produce. {2}{3}
