Full Description
Traces of medieval ridge and furrow were recorded in this location in Autumn 2014, during magnetometry survey of land off Lincoln Road. The remains were identified as blocks of parallel linear magnetic anomalies, aligned on a mixture of north to south and east to west axes. {1}
Subsequent trial trenching, conducted in this area in October 2015, recorded the remains of medieval ridge and furrow and a number of probable former field boundaries. The ridge and furrow appeared to match the alignments of the magnetic anomalies recorded by the prior magnetometry survey. No artefacts were recovered from any of the features, although analysis of an environmental sample taken from one of the probable boundary ditches revealed the presence of probable hearth waste, likely deposited as part of the manuring process for the adjacent fields. The lack of finds recovered from the ridge and furrow might suggest that these fields were located some distance away from any significant associated settlement activity. {2}{3}
