Full Description

Traces of medieval ridge and furrow were recorded in this location in Autumn 2014, during magnetometry survey of land off Lincoln Road. The remains were identified as blocks of parallel linear magnetic anomalies, mostly aligned on a north to south axis, but with a separate block aligned on an east to west axis at the westernmost edge of the site. {1} Subsequent trial trenching, conducted in this area in October 2015, recorded the remains of medieval ridge and furrow and a probable former field boundary. The ridge and furrow matched the alignments of the magnetic anomalies recorded by the prior magnetometry survey, being largely north to south aligned, but with a block of east to west aligned furrows at the westernmost edge of the site. No artefacts were recovered from any of the furrows, although 3 abraded fragments of fired clay and 1 piece of animal rib bone were recovered from the fill of the probable former field boundary. The lack of finds recovered from the ridge and furrow might suggest that these fields were located some distance away from any significant associated settlement activity. {2}{3}
