Full Description
Post-medieval activity was recorded in this location in February 2015, during trial trenching on land off Tattershall Road. The activity comprised the remains of three ditches and a spread of buried 'dark earth' material, from which a small assemblage of mid 16th to 18th century pottery was recovered, along with a single horse premolar tooth. The pottery assemblage was comprised of fragments from a wide variety of vessel forms and fabrics, including sherds of Bourne D ware, Red Earthenware, Brown Glazed Earthenware and Cistercian ware. The ditches likely functioned as former boundary or drainage features, although they did not appear to share a common alignment, and no obvious linear system could be determined. {1}{2}
Further post-medieval ditches were recorded in May 2016, in the field to the south of those previously identified, during a second phase of trial trenching on land off Tattershall Road. A small assemblage of early post-medieval finds, comprising three sherds of pottery and two fragments of brick, were recovered from the fills of these features. Also recorded during the trenching were the foundations of a length of stone wall, consisting of three courses of roughly dressed and unbonded limestone blocks. A fragment of post-medieval roof tile was found in the deposit immediately sealing these, indicating a rough date for the feature. It could not be determined, however, whether the remains represented part of a former boundary wall, or had formed part of a larger structure or building. {3}{4}
