Full Description

The churchyard at the Church of St Peter is depicted on the 2nd edition 25 inch Ordnance Survey County Series map. It likely dates to at least the 14th century, when the church it serves was built (see PRN 41455). {1} A small assemblage of medieval and post-medieval finds were recovered from the graveyard soils in 2002, during archaeological monitoring of the excavation of a new cable trench within the churchyard. The assemblage comprised 5 sherds of Toynton Sll Saints or Bolingbroke wares, dating from the 13th to 17th centuries, a few pieces of post-medieval brick and tile, and a single clay pipe stem. Several fragments of bone were also identified (but not retained) in the graveyard soils, which could indicate the presence of burials in this part of the graveyard, although the bone could not definitively be identified as human. {2}{3}
