Full Description

The churchyard at the Church of St Mary is depicted on the 2nd edition 25 inch Ordnance Survey County Series map. The church it serves has its origins in the late Saxon period (see PRN 64383), and it may be that the churchyard dates to this period as well. {1} The articulated remains of at least five burials were identified in the churchyard of St Mary's Church, in May 2012, during the monitoring of groundworks for the installation of an arched drain and water pipe. The burials comprised two adults and three juveniles, although a quantity of disarticulated bone was also recovered. A horizontally laid stone slab was also recorded along the route of the pipeline; this was interpreted as a possible re-used grave cover or gravestones. Neither the burials or the stone slab could be closely dated, though several sherds of unstratified medieval pottery were recovered from the surrounding topsoil. {2}{3}
