Monument record MLI116039 - Cropmark ring ditches south of Fengate Drove in Weston

Summary

Cropmark ring ditches in Weston, possibly Iron Age / Roman round houses.

Type and Period (3)

Protected Status/Designation

  • None recorded

Full Description

25802 Cropmarks seen on aerial photographs. A number of enclosures and circular cropmarks, several of them overlapping each other. The circular cropmarks have been interpreted as ring ditches. They may be evidence of late Iron Age and/or Roman settlement or salt making activity. They could potentially be early Bronze Age barrows but the cropmarks are similar to groups of cropmarks to the south (PRN 25800 and 25801) which are probably not barrows and so this interpretation is not preferred. There are similar ring ditches to the west (PRN 25709). {1}{2} There are extinct water courses in the vicinity and the cropmarks are on the high point of a large roddon running approximately north to south. {3}
