Monument record MLI116038 - Cropmark ring ditches east of Broad Gate, Weston

Summary

Cropmark ring ditches in Weston, possibly Iron Age / Roman round houses.

Type and Period (3)

Protected Status/Designation

  • None recorded

Full Description

Cropmarks seen on aerial photographs on the Google maps website. A number of enclosures and circular cropmarks, several of them overlapping each other. The circular cropmarks have been interpreted as ring ditches. They may be evidence of late Iron Age and/or Roman settlement or salt making activity. They could potentially be early Bronze Age barrows but the cropmarks are similar to a group of cropmarks to the south (PRN 25800) which, if interconnected, would form one of the largest Bronze Age cemeteries in Europe and so this latter interpretation is not preferred. {1}{2} There are extinct water courses in the vicinity and the cropmarks are on the high point of a large roddon running approximately north to south. {3}
