Full Description

[This record was formerly recorded under PRN65832 which has now been removed from the HER.] Chapel Hill war memorial in Holland Fen is situated in the churchyard of Holy Trinity Church to the south of the hamlet of Chapel Hill. It is in the parish of Holland Fen with Brothertoft which is adjacent to the parish of Dogdyke. The exact unveiling date of the war memorial is unknown although carol singers were still raising money for the memorial fund in December 1920. The memorial itself is a twelve foot (three and a half metres) high tapered stone cross mounted on a cubic plinth and base. The memorial honours those who died in the First World War and Second World War, both soldiers and civilians. {1} Chapel Hill war memorial is north of Trinity Lodge on North Forty Foot Bank, Chapel Hill, Dogdyke. It is in the parish of Holland Fen with Brothertoft although it was formerly in the old parish of Pelhams Lands. This First World War memorial, with later additions for the Second World War, is a simple yet poignant stone Latin cross. It is located within the churchyard of the former Holy Trinity Church; now (2017) a private residence. It commemorates eight members of the local community who lost their lives in the First World War and after the Second World War an additional inscription was added with six further names. Five of these were civilians: members of the Richardson family, killed by a direct hit on their house by a lone enemy raiding aircraft on 9 March 1941.
