Full Description

Burgh le Marsh war memorial stands at 13.5ft (4m) and is carved from Portland stone. It features a calvary or Somersby churchyard cross and overlooks the High Street in its position in front of the church. The memorial was unveiled in 1920 to commemorate those who died in the First World War. Further names of the dead from the Second World War were later added. {1} This memorial takes the form of a tall Calvary cross in Portland stone, sited in the churchyard of the parish church, close to the lych gate. The memorial stands on a square of concrete and has a square base. Above this there is a three-stage plinth: the lowest stage is square on plan, supporting the octagonal middle and upper stages, which are separated by a carved wreath. The cross shaft is octagonal in section with an incised floral design on the east and west sides. The hooded cross-head, rising from a moulded collar, bears the carved figure of Christ crucified. A ceremony to unveil the memorial was held on 14 December 1920.
